Letter from the President                  May 2008

The 2008 annual Alabama Animal Control Association/Alabama Humane Federation conference held in Hoover Alabama, proved to be one of the best yet. On behalf of the board of the AACA, I would like to express a rousing, “job well done” to Robert Davis (City of Hoover Animal Control) for the excellent work he put forth for this conference. With reference to our discussions prior to the conference, Robert never failed to keep me abreast of his progress and often reminded me that there is no “I” in team.  So, in the spirit of teamwork, I would like to recognize those individuals who without their assistance this conference could not have occurred.  They are: Susan Fuqua, Denene Wright, Brent Parrot, Dana Moore, Danny Salter, Erin Colbaugh, Mindy Wyatt, Jim Bentley and the City of Hoover Mayor’s Office all of whom are shining examples of team players and the reason why “Hoover’s Happening”!  Additionally, I would like to thank Donald Kendrick with Spay Alabama and Wade Parrot with Veal Convention Services Inc. both who played a huge role in the set up and preparation for this conference.  Hoover has definitely raised the bar for future conferences and I know that we will strive to reach it.

I thank the board members of the Alabama Humane Federation for their work and dedication to the conference. The presence of the members of the AHF was definitely felt.  The tireless work put forth via the legislative efforts by this group was invaluable, and it is important to remember that everything they do benefits not only the lives of animals but those individuals that work in any aspect of animal welfare and the animal control professions.

The calendar years of 2008/2009 hold several opportunities for training that are already in the preparation stage with the hope of several more additions. We do however want to hear your ideas and suggestions for training.  Feel free to contact myself or any of the board members, and we will be glad to consider your suggestions and discuss them at our board meeting to ascertain the feasibility of arranging the training you need.  Additionally, there is a discussion group on our website so feel free to log in and let us know what you think.  As mentioned before, teamwork is very important and both the AACA and AHF will work together for animal control/welfare, but without active members we are limited in what we can do.  If you think you have let your membership in one or both of these organizations lapse please look into renewing it as soon as possible.

I am excited to serve another year as President of AACA and am looking forward to working with you to achieve those goals that will benefit us all.

I look forward to serving as the President of the AACA and will leave you with this thought from Theodore Roosevelt:

“Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”
